In Pursuit of the Dream

Jan 29, 2018
In 2007, Josh Pratt of Just Performance Fitness sat down to outline what his dream of the future of fitness would be. Just ten years later, he’s a successful business owner with a set of customers who would follow him anywhere.

It Starts with a Dream

From the time he was a pre-teen Josh Pratt had a passion for sports and fitness. That love evolved through the years, bringing him to college at UCONN, where he specialized in Strength and Condition, studying under renowned sports scientist, Dr. William Kraemer. Before he even graduated, Josh sat down and outlined what his fitness empire would be.

That was back in 2007, and in 2012, he was able to open his first location of Just Performance Fitness, a friendly, community-oriented gym. Now, just five years after opening that first center, he’s well on his way to accomplishing the dream he outlined in a binder as a college student. To Josh, fitness is about more than just strength, or cardio. It’s about being healthy and helping people accomplish their goals safely and effectively.

“When you walk into my location, I want you to know that there’s no pressure. We’re all here to help you – from trainers like myself to fellow members. Fitness is something different for everyone. It’s a journey. We’re all here because we want to be better than we were yesterday.”

Hunger for Knowledge

His hunger for knowledge supports Josh's commitment to helping his members be better than they were yesterday. Josh interned at UCONN helping to run Dr. Kraemer’s studies and holds the highest level of certification in National Strength and Conditioning, which allows him to work with individuals at all levels of fitness. He also holds his NSCA TSAC-F, which allows him to train Special Ops and SWAT teams, ISSA SFN - Specialist in Fitness Nutrition Certificate, TRX GSTC - Group Suspension Training Course Certification and CrossFit Level I. Trust is a crucial component to Josh’s success, and it’s obvious his members value his knowledge and experience.

“This guy knows his stuff,” says a member as Josh shows us around the gym. “I’m a professional – a champion, and I trust him. I can say this is what I want to accomplish, and he’ll tell me exactly what I need to do to get there.”

Josh is down to earth and shrugs at the compliment. “I want people to know I’m knowledgeable, but there’s always room to learn and grow. When people hear our name, I want them to know we offer a quality experience they can’t get anywhere else.”

Persistence Pays Off

Walking around Just Performance Fitness’ more than 11,985 square foot location in Danielson will leave you awestruck. From basic cardio on treadmills to Ninja Warrior and CrossFit, it’s a well-rounded gym experience, but that didn’t happen overnight.

When asked what advice he’d give other small business owners he says, “Things have been rough before, but you have to keep going towards your goal. Always pursue your dream and don’t settle for mediocre or what others feel you should do.”

Savings Institute Bank & Trust is proud to have helped Josh on his journey to accomplish his dream of expanding Just Performance Fitness. He decided to go with the Bank after a conversation with Gene Michael Deary, a member of the gym and SVP, Director of Retail Lending at the Bank.

“Gene Michael listened to what my goals were, and he put me in touch with Mark Light to talk about a commercial loan,” Josh says when asked about Savings Institute Bank & Trust. “I like the fact the Bank is family friendly, and Mark has become more than just my lender, I consider him to be a friend.”
