NORWICH CT (JULY 2016) – The second annual Uniting for United Competitive Food Drive brought together 30 local businesses for a cause greater than them all – ending hunger in New London County. Participating businesses brought in more than 6,000 pounds of food and $6,000 in cash donations. Together, this is the equivalent of 17,000 meals, which will help feed the nearly 22,000 food insecure residents in New London County during the upcoming summer months. The collection benefited the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center, a program of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, which struggles each summer season to provide food to the residents in need.
The major sponsors of the event, Rotary Community Corp of Norwich and Savings Institute Bank & Trust gathered up local businesses to compete, along with finding media sponsors to assist with spreading the word. These media sponsors included The Bulletin, Hall Communications, Cumulus Radio and Full Power Radio. There were eight category winners, an overall winner, and an overall cash winner. Winners included:
