Uniting for United Competitive Food Drive Brings Together Over 20 Local Businesses

May 12, 2016

NORWICH CT – According to a recent survey conducted by United Way approximately 35,500 people in New London County struggle with food insecurity. This food insecurity isn’t seasonal, although donations sometimes are. Food collection and distribution organizations, like the United Way, often have a hard time filling their pantries during the summer months.  That’s why Savings Institute Bank & Trust, along with Rotary Community Corp of Norwich and The Bulletin have come together as major sponsors of the first annual ‘Uniting for United’ competitive food drive to benefit the United Way Gemma E. Moran Food Pantry.  The ‘Uniting for United’ food drive is spearheaded by Rotary Community Corp of Norwich’s Dan Spellman and Savings Institute Bank & Trust’s Barry Shead and Cassandra Giovanni. This competition brings together over twenty local businesses in seventy-five different locations to see who can collect the most food in a three-tiered competition including a one on one competition, a business type category, and an overall category.

“We were thrilled when Dan [of Rotary Community Corp] approached us with the idea to bring together local businesses in a friendly competition. We hope that this can become an annual tradition for the New London County community,” stated Cassandra Giovanni, Marketing Project Leader at Savings Institute Bank & Trust.

Each business type category has been assigned a much-needed protein to collect from May 23rd, 2016 – June 3rd, 2016. Donations from each location will be collected on June 3rd to be brought for an official weigh-in at Savings Institute Bank & Trust’s 108 Salem Turnpike Norwich branch.
